Death Note is a 110 chapter manga barring special bonus chapters like issue zero. The best parts of the manga are the little details like when Light Yagami loses his memory of the darkness notebook and we get to see what he's really like or when a corporation gains control of the darkness notebook. In a movie we don't get to see all those things.
I do not want to see a Death Note movie that is faithful to the plot of the manga. In the manga, there are different situations where different people get usage of the Death Note and we see how they react to things like the Shimigami plus how the book changes them. One of the best parts of the manga was the various rules of the book that when a name is written in it inspires people to die and how people get around these rules.
I want a movie that takes the ingredients. A user of the death note, a Shimagami (maybe for the U.S. could be a Grim Reaper), and someone trying to catch him. People can use the book for power, fame, fortune, to change the world, and for sex (you can control the actions of the person before you die and there is a death note eraser which is mentioned in issue zero). I want to see someone using the book for a different purpose (not to become a God-like figure). The manga is only 110 chapters long and it goes by far too quickly.
A movie based on the manga featuring the characters of Near, L, and Kira would not be worthwhile. A movie that explores the different eccentricities of how people would react differently to a book that kills people would be an excellent movie.
