If you are just trying to impress some people, or draw a certain anime character, then it is probably best to not come up with your own style. If you are drawing just for the fun of it, or if you want to make it your future occupation, then coming up with your own style is best. Many great artists have come up with their own style of drawing, like the people who draw for Bleach, Inuyasha, Darker than Black, Ladies Versus Butlers, Dragon Ball Z, Durarara, and etc. But yours doesn't have to be completely different or bizarre; I came up with my own style and intend on sticking with it as my expertise deepens. True expertise comes over time and practice.
There are still some things that are generally the same for each character though, women have bigger eyes and irises than males, males have more definition in the face, male faces are more angular than females, and anime characters tend to have the nose have fewer lines and definition than it really does unless if they are over dramatically outraged. People mainly draw the nose, hair, mouth, ears, and eyes differently.
The nose will usually be long, skinny, and pointy or short and curvy while the male's nose will usually be more broad and long or short and curvy. The hair can be different in other animes; like the shine of white is thick and goes across the hair, skinny, and goes across the hair, zig zags and goes across the hair, show shines in certain areas of the hair, or have a quickly drawn circle on the edge of it. Sometimes the hair is not the type of hair that shines, that's when most people put in to it.
Next is the mouth, sometimes it has some of the line missing, they can even draw a speck or too and that is it. On some animes it shows the upper lip and on others it might show the lower lip more.
The ears can be drawn with very little, to really complex. Sometimes you can find it shaped like a circle, bent over, large with a great amount of details that can't even be seen on people. What you have to remember is that the ear is open on the side, when drawing, you have to remember to not draw the inside of the ear while drawing a front view face profile.
The eyes are the most changed and different component in each anime. Some can be shaped like vertical ovals or horizontal ones. Some have a lot of shimmer in the eye and some are dull with just one color. The eyes are very crucial and really help decide on the character's emotion as well as the mouth. Most of the anime characters usually have shimmer on the right part of their eye so I put mine on the person's left.
Austin J. Cunningham is a freshman attending West Mecklenburg High School and has always been interested in how cartoons were able to draw some of their greatest creations. Austin started drawing a little when he was young but got more serious and detailed as he entered high school. Austin has outdone people who have been drawing for years in just a few months. He have exponentially increased in my ability to draw anime characters. He has been getting request from other classmates to draw images and to buy some of his artwork. Austin Cunningham will definitely have achieved far greater artistic abilities than most people.
